What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial dental root made of titanium or zirconium that integrates into the jawbone and serves as a support for a dental crown, bridge or prosthesis. It is the most advanced modern solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a permanent and aesthetic alternative to classic dentures.

Unlike dental bridges that require the grinding of neighboring healthy teeth, dental implants are independent and do not affect the surrounding teeth. The success rate of modern dental implants exceeds 95-98% in the long term.

Structure of a Dental Implant

A complete dental implant system consists of three main components:

  1. The implant (screw): The titanium or zirconium part that is surgically inserted into the maxillary or mandibular bone. It has the shape of a screw and integrates with the bone in a process called osseointegration.
  2. The abutment (prosthetic abutment): The intermediate component that attaches to the implant and connects the implant with the dental crown.
  3. Dental crown: The visible part that imitates the natural tooth, made of ceramic or zirconium.

Treatment stages, costs and eligibility criteria are covered separately: our dental implant page for Sector 1, the full price list, the guide on who is a candidate for an implant and the article on pain and recovery.

Types of Dental Implants

1. By Material

  • Titanium implants: The most used, with a high success rate due to excellent biocompatibility. Titanium integrates perfectly with the bone.
  • Zirconium implants: White, aesthetic ceramic alternatives, recommended for people with metal allergies or special aesthetic requirements.

3. According to the Insertion Technique

  • Classic implants (in two stages): The implant is mounted, waiting for healing 3-6 months, then the abutment and the crown are added.
  • Implants with immediate loading: The temporary crown is mounted immediately after the implant (on the same day), indicated in certain cases.
  • All-on-4 / All-on-6: Technique for replacing the complete arch with only 4-6 implants.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Natural Appearance: Looks and works exactly like natural teeth
  • Permanent: With proper care, they can last a lifetime
  • Preserves Bone: Prevents bone resorption that occurs after tooth loss
  • Does Not Affect Neighboring Teeth: Unlike bridges, does not require grinding of healthy teeth
  • Maximum Comfort: Does not move, does not cause irritation like mobile prostheses
  • Full Functionality: Chewing is as efficient as with natural teeth
  • Easy Care: Brush and floss like natural teeth. Daily use of an oral irrigator is recommended.
  • Improve Speech: Unlike mobile prostheses which can slide around
  • Increases Self-Confidence: Smile naturally, without embarrassment

Care of Dental Implants

Implants require the same care as natural teeth:

  • Brushing: Twice a day, 2 minutes, with fluoride toothpaste
  • Dental floss: Daily, for cleaning the interdental spaces
  • Oral irrigator: Recommended for superior hygiene
  • Periodic checks: Every 6 months, with professional descaling
  • Avoid smoking: Smoking increases the risk of implant failure
  • Balanced diet: Avoid excessively hard food (ice, hard seeds)
