What Is A Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artificial dental root made of titanium or zirconium that integrates into the jawbone and serves as a support for a dental crown, bridge or prosthesis. It is the most advanced modern solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a permanent and aesthetic alternative to classic dentures.
Unlike dental bridges that require the grinding of neighboring healthy teeth, dental implants are independent and do not affect the surrounding teeth. The success rate of modern dental implants exceeds 95-98% in the long term.
Structure of a Dental Implant
A complete dental implant system consists of three main components:
- The implant (screw): The titanium or zirconium part that is surgically inserted into the maxillary or mandibular bone. It has the shape of a screw and integrates with the bone in a process called osseointegration.
- The abutment (prosthetic abutment): The intermediate component that attaches to the implant and connects the implant with the dental crown.
- Dental crown: The visible part that imitates the natural tooth, made of ceramic or zirconium.
Types of Dental Implants
1. By Material
- Titanium implants: The most used, with a high success rate due to excellent biocompatibility. Titanium integrates perfectly with the bone.
- Zirconium implants: White, aesthetic ceramic alternatives, recommended for people with metal allergies or special aesthetic requirements.
2. By Brand and Quality
At Happy Clinic Pipera, we exclusively use premium implant systems:
NEODENT by STRAUMANN
2600 RON
Top Swiss brand, world leader in implantology. SLA treated surface for fast osseointegration.
BREDENT
3200 RON
High quality German system, recognized for exceptional precision and durability.
3. According to the Insertion Technique
- Classic implants (in two stages): The implant is mounted, waiting for healing 3-6 months, then the abutment and the crown are added.
- Implants with immediate loading: The temporary crown is mounted immediately after the implant (on the same day), indicated in certain cases.
- All-on-4 / All-on-6: Technique for replacing the complete arch with only 4-6 implants.
Dental Implant Installation Procedure - Step By Step
Stage 1: Initial Consultation and Evaluation
The first visit includes:
- Full clinical examination
- Panoramic radiography (OPG) or 3D computed tomography (CT)
- Evaluation of bone density and volume
- Customized treatment plan with cost estimate
Stage 2: Preparation (If Necessary)
In some cases, preparatory procedures are necessary before implantation:
- Bone augmentation (bone grafting): If the bone volume is insufficient
- Sinus lift: Raising the maxillary sinus to create space for the implant
- Extraction of the compromised tooth: After 2-3 months of healing
Stage 3: Implant Insertion
Steps of the procedure:
- Local anesthesia is administered
- An incision is made in the gum to expose the bone
- Prepare the alveolus in the bone with precision drills specific to each brand
- The dental implant is inserted into the bone
- The gingiva is sutured over the implant (or a healing cap is mounted)
Stage 4: Osseointegration (Healing)
Duration: 3-6 months
During this period, the implant integrates into the jawbone. The process is painless and the patient can wear a temporary prosthesis for aesthetics.
Stage 5: Fitting the Abutment
After complete healing, the implant is uncovered and a healing abutment with the role of gum conformer is mounted.
Stage 6: Fitting the Final Crown
Impressions are taken, the customized prosthetic abutment and customized crown are made in the laboratory and fixed over the implant. The result is a tooth that looks and functions like a natural one.
How long does it take to mount a dental implant?
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| Initial consultation | 30-60 minutes |
| Implant insertion (surgery) | 30-60 minutes/implant |
| Osseointegration (healing) | 3-6 months |
| Mounting the healing abutment | 15-30 minutes |
| Crown making and custom prosthetic abutment | 1-2 weeks |
| TOTAL (from start to finish) | 4-7 months |
Is Dental Implant Installation Painful?
NO! Thanks to modern local anesthesia, the implant insertion procedure is completely painless.
Most patients report that the sensation is similar to a simple tooth extraction or even less uncomfortable.
By Procedure:
- Day 1-3: Slight discomfort, minimal swelling, controllable with standard analgesics (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
- Day 4-7: Significant improvement, return to normal activities
- After 2 weeks: Complete soft tissue healing, pain free
At Happy Clinic we use minimally invasive surgical techniques and state-of-the-art anesthetics for maximum patient comfort.
The Advantages of Dental Implants

- Does Not Affect Neighboring Teeth: Unlike bridges, does not require grinding of healthy teeth
- Maximum Comfort: Does not move, does not cause irritation like mobile prostheses
- Full Functionality: Chewing is as efficient as with natural teeth
- Easy Care: Brush and floss like natural teeth. Daily use of an oral irrigator is recommended.
