What Is Dental Caries?
Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases, appearing as a result of the progressive destruction of the tooth structure. This is caused by the action of bacteria in the oral cavity, which transform sugars from food into acids that attack tooth enamel.
In the early stages, caries can be asymptomatic and difficult to notice, which is why regular dental checks are essential. As it progresses, sensitivity to cold, hot or sweet, pain and, in advanced cases, infections that require complex treatments may appear.
Main Causes of Caries
- Insufficient oral hygiene: Incorrect or irregular brushing allows the accumulation of bacterial plaque on the surface of the teeth.
- Frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks: Sugar is the main source of energy for acid-producing bacteria.
- Accumulated bacterial plaque: The deposits on the surface of the teeth create an environment conducive to the development of caries.
- Individual predisposition: Enamel structure, saliva composition and other genetic factors can influence caries risk.
How do we prevent tooth decay?
Prevention is the most effective method to maintain the health of the teeth. This includes:
Correct brushing
At least twice a day, with proper technique and fluoride toothpaste.
Dental floss
Daily use of dental floss for cleaning the interdental spaces.
Periodic checks
Regular visits to the dentist and professional cleanings.
Also, a balanced diet and limiting sugar consumption significantly contribute to reducing the risk of caries.
Dental Caries Treatment
At Happy Clinic, caries treatment is carried out with attention to detail and with modern, aesthetic and durable materials. Depending on the stage of the caries, the intervention may vary:
- Minimally invasive fillings: For caries detected in early or moderate stages, the affected tissue is removed and the tooth is restored with aesthetic composite materials.
- root canal treatment: When the caries has progressed and reached the nerve of the tooth, it is necessary to remove the infected pulp tissue and seal the root canals.
- Dental crowns: In advanced cases, when the tooth structure is significantly compromised, a dental crown protects and restores the shape and function of the tooth.
Our goal is to detect and treat caries as early as possible, in order to preserve as much of the natural structure of the tooth as possible and to ensure the patient's comfort.
